There is a very interesting story as to how the earwig got its name. The name come from a time when the popular fashion was powdered wigs. The earwig, fond of moist environments, eventually made its home under the wigs. While the host (wig wearer) slept, the insects would creep out and infest the ear canal. False. I just made this up. I actually have no idea where the name comes from, but it sounds like it could be true though… 🙂
The earwig is a long flat bodies insect most easily identified by the long forceps on its abdomen. They look kind if threatening, but are mainly used for holding prey and in mating as well. I don’t think they could actually pinch you with them. Earwigs are nocturnal and tend to hide in shady spots during the day.
